If you want to work in an industry that is interesting, always changing and for which there is always strong demand fashion is a good choice. There is always plenty of work available.

Go to any job board that specialises in fashion recruitment and you will find literally thousands of fashion jobs.  In the UK, this is how the majority of fashion jobs are advertised, so these specialist jobs is where you should be looking to find work. However, bear in mind that the world of fashion is still a tight knit one, so some fashion recruitment is still done through the grapevine. In the world of fashion who you know is almost as important as what you know.

The two paths into fashion

If you are interested in working in the fashion industry and progressing within the sector, you have a two main ways to do it.

Having a fashion degree is an excellent way of ensuring that you progress quickly in the industry. However, it is important to realise that even with a good degree you have to start at the bottom and work your way up. There really are no shortcuts unless you are lucky and catch the eye of a designer or someone important in the industry.

Therefore, if you want to work in fashion the sooner you find your first fashion job the better. For most people that means working in fashion retail at the weekends and during the first year or so of college.

During this time, you need to work hard and network as much as possible. If you get the chance, volunteer to work on special projects and take on supervisory roles. Doing this gets you noticed and really helps to fill out your CV.

If you do not go to college and get your fashion degree that does not mean you are automatically locked out of the better jobs. Taking a fashion retail job or support role is a good way to work your way up through the industry.
